A report by the glacial experts suggests loss of glaciers would take away summertime source of river water, drinking water and hydroelectric power from South Asia and western slopes of the Andes, jeopardising the environment to large extent.

Most of the world’s mountain glaciers are the water suppliers, which seem to be drying at a rapid pace as the climate is warming up. A latest study by the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) based at University of Zurich, supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) revealed that the long term trend was clearly towards a warming world with less mountain ice and water trouble from the Andes to the Himalayas.
The global average temperature dropped from its seasonal norm in recent months, resulting in the unusually excessive snowfall in the northern hemisphere. The big danger ahead reported by the glacial experts was that the loss of glaciers would take away summertime source of river water, drinking water and hydroelectric power in places like south Asia and cities along the western slopes of the Andes.
Emission of carbon monoxide from vehicles results in ozone depletion, where the Ultra-Violet (UV) rays cannot pass the earth atmosphere, thus raising the earth temperature. Smokes emitted from industries also pollute the air around them resulting in more hazardous environmental issues.
Millions of people depend on run-off from mountain snow and ice in the warm seasons, with change in the climate it is going to make that run-off disappear. The future of each and every country would be vague and in danger if this warming continues the same way as it is now. This will not only result in melting of the polar ice caps and glaciers, but also jeopardise the environment to a very large extent.
It’s not the time to sit back and cry over the spilt milk, but to do something about the environment, so that our future can be safe and secure. Small initiatives can make huge differences. If we keep on doing injustice to the ‘Mother Nature’ then we will be the one to suffer in her very own hands.
Using vehicles with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) benefits, pollution control test including being a cautious and responsible citizen can only help to sort such problems. As the earth we dwell in is our own home. We have to take care of our habitat.
